Honesty about sin
The Christian word “sin” includes harmful actions, but goes deeper than a list of obvious wrongs. It describes our rejection of God's rightful place and our failure to love God and neighbour as we should. It can be expressed through pride, greed, dishonesty, indifference and many other choices.
Repentance begins when we stop excusing ourselves or measuring our lives only against people who appear worse. We bring the truth to God, trusting that He already knows it.

Turning towards God
Repentance has a direction. It is turning from self-rule towards Jesus. It includes asking forgiveness and becoming willing to leave behind practices and priorities that oppose God's will.
This does not mean achieving instant perfection before God accepts you. Christianity teaches that forgiveness is received through Jesus. Change follows as the evidence and continuing work of a new relationship with Him.
A continuing way of life
Christians still fail and need to repent. The difference is not that they never struggle, but that they no longer want sin to rule without challenge. They return to God, seek help, make amends where possible and keep learning obedience.
